Topamax – A calm and Peaceful Existence without Seizure
Topamax ,the drug is famous for Partial Seizures and grand mal seizures.This anticonvulsant drug Topamax, known as the generic topiramate, is generally used to treat mild attacks referred to as partial seizures and the severe tonic-clonic convulsions also known as grand mal seizures.
The Anticonvulsant Medication – Epilepsy Treatment
Though Topamax is used to treat epilepsy [in both children and adults] but it has also been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prevent migraine headaches.Its noticeable that Topamax will not treat a headache that has already begun. This drug has been investigated for use in treatment of obesity, in the possible use for treatment of alcoholism, Lennux-Gastaut syndrome, post traumatic stress disorder, infantile spasm, obsessive-compulsive disorder, smoking cessation, and naturopathic pain.
Please note that if you are taking the epilepsy treatment with Topamax, don’t stop it suddenly because if you do so the frequency of your seizures may increase.
There are some guidelines for the use of Topamax. These are as follows—
-à Do not use Topamax if you have:
- bronchitis, asthma, emphysema
- liver disease, kidney disease or a history of kidney stones
- glaucoma
- or if you have recently had surgery
Topamax is known to trigger severe nearsightedness along with increased pressure inside the eye, so if you develop any eye pain or blurred vision call you doctor immediately. During the treatment period, avoid driving or any other activity that requires full mental alertness until you are certain how the drug affects you.
It is advisable that to notice that the safety of Topamax has not been verified for pregnant women and the drug is recommended for use during pregnancy only if prescribed by your doctor. It is not known if it affects the nursing baby, but the medicine can pass in to breast milk.
The Reactions of Topamax during its using period:
Following are the adverse reactions that could appear while taking Tomapax:
- memory problems, confusion, somnolence
- fatigue, psychomotor slowing
- nausea, diarrhea, anorexia (loss of appetite)
- upper respiratory tract infection
- acute myopia, blurred vision, secondary angle closure glaucoma
- dizziness, headache
- numbness and tingling
- injury, fever, muscle weakness
- hyperthermia
- kidney stone formation
- personality disorder
The initial dose of Topamax is low and increased in slow steps – usually 25 to 50 mg daily in two single doses. It’s done to avoid early side effects of Topamax.It’s advisable to take medication as prescribed to help avoid the potential for overdose.
The symptoms of Topamax overdose:
- fainting, convulsion, coma
- troubled thinking, loss of coordination, speech problems
- Pounding or irregular heartbeat. bone pain
- fainting, convulsion, coma
- excessive hunger
- depression, agitation
- inability to respond to things around you
- upset stomach, stomach pain, vomiting
