Tricor is a fibrate class drug whose function is to reduce the low-density protein (LDL) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) levels like other fibrates. 

The function of Tricor:

Tricor is a lipid regulating agent specially formulated for oral administration .Each Tricor tablet contains 48 mg or 145 mg of fenofibrate. 

Fenofibrate is used to lower trygliceride (fat-like substances) levels in patients at risk of cardiovascular disease and to produce reductions in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein B. Usually it works to prevent the development of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) and it has beneficial effect on the insulin resistance featured by the metabolic syndrome.Tricor can be used alone or in combination with other medicines to treat hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia. 

For diabetes patients, Tricor has shown to have improved some micro-vascular complications of the disease and to have had significant positive changes in overall cardiovascular events. 

Tricor increases the urinary excretion of uric acid and reduces serum uric acid levels.

Through Tricor’s mechanism, it activates lipoprotein lipase and reduces production of apoprotein C-III (an inhibitor of lipoprotein lipase activity).  And ultimately, this medication manages to increase lipolysis and elimination of triglyceride-rich particles from plasma. 

It is advisable that Tricor should be taken under doctor’s prescription only to get the best result.If there is any special dietary instruction given by the medical health care provider in order to get the best results, it should be followed strictly. 

Please note that Tricor has important interactions with other drugs .So try to avoid taking it concurrently with the following: 

• inflammation or pain medicine, except narcotics
• HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, fluvastatin, simvastatin, etc.
• anticoagulants (blood thinners)
• Penicillamine, Cyclosporine, Cisplatin
• Deferoxamine, Plicamycin
• other medicine for infections
• medicine for arthritis (gold salts)
  

Another important fact that Tricor should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding because of the potential for tumorigenicity as seen in animal studies.

Side Effects of Tricor:

• gastrointestinal disorder, rectal disorder, increased appetite, vomiting, peptic ulcer, rectal hemorrhage, liver fatty deposit, cholecystitis, nausea, anorexia, gamma glutamyl transpeptidase
• anemia, leukopenia, diabetes milletus, gout, weight loss
• leg cramps, myalgia, joint disorder, arthrotis, bursitis, myositis
• peripheral vascular disorder, tachycardia, arrhythmia, varicose vein, migraine, electrocardiogram abnormal, vasodilatation, coronary artery disorder
• Abnormal kidney function, cystitis, prostatic disorder, etc.
• Dizziness, insomnia, conjunctivitis, eye disorder, otitis media.
