Trileptal – Best Drug To Treat Partial Seizure Epilepsy

 

Trileptal is recommended for use of adjunctive therapy or immunotherapy to treat partial seizure epilepsy in adults and children ages 4-16.Trilepatal, the drug is famous for the treatment of Partial Seizures and bipolar disorder. It is available as 150 mg, 300 mg and 600 mg film-coated extended release tablets.

                                                                                                  

Function of Oxcarbazepine (Marketed as Trilepatal):

                                                                                 

Oxcarbazepine (Marketed as Trilepatal), the anticonvulsant and mood stabilizing drug works by slowing abnormal nerve impulses in the brain. Oxacarbazepine is rapidly reduced in the liver by cytosolic enzymes to a 10-monohydroxy metabolite, MHD, which is primarily responsible for the pharmacological effect of Trileptal.

 

Oxicarbazepine is structurally a derivative of carbamazepine with an extra oxygen atom on the dibenzazepine ring. The only difference is that Trileptal prevents anemia and reduces the impact on the liver as it metabolizes the drug.

This anticonvulsant drug was first synthesized in 1966, and it was approved for use in different times in different countries. In Denmark it was approved in 1990, in Spain in 1993, in Portugal in 1997, in the EU countries in 1999 and in the US in 2000.

If you have any medical condition, make sure to tell your doctor about it before the beginning of treatments with Trileptal because this drug can lead to a loss of sodium from the blood. In time, sodium loss left untreated can lead to convulsions, coma, and even death. I case if you have a kidney disease, you should be prescribed a lower dose of Trileptal.

While being under the treatment of Trileptal, it is advisable to avoid Consuming alcohol.

Other drugs like oral contraceptives,  Phenobarbital, calcium channel blockers such as verapamil or felodipine, Phenobarbital, etc, could also have negative interactions with the effects of Trileptal. Because its side effects may impair your thinking.During the treatment period, avoid driving or any other activity that requires full mental alertness until you are certain how the drug affects you.

Birth control pills make this medicine less effective so the use of a non-hormone method of birth control to prevent pregnancy is usually recommended while taking the drug.
It is believed that Teriptal can cause serious birth defects and it appears to pass into breast milk so avoid breastfeeding while taking this medication.

Trileptal can cause adverse reactions different for each individual. Some of them are as follows:

-         nausea, vomiting, dizziness

-         hyponatremia

-         tremor, uncoordinated muscle movement

-         blurred or double vision

-         weakness, headache

-         abnormal gait

-         involuntary movement of the eyeballs

What to do in case of Trileptal overdose?

 In case of Any Trileptal overdose, contact the nearest Hospital and seek immediate medical attention as it can cause serious consequences.
